A Bit of Tournament History
Bubbling with excitement after taking first place in a New Zealand fishing tournament, Engineer Juan De Dios De La Torre was anxious to bring the same type of experience to his home in Puerto Vallarta. He gathered together a group of his friends and was able to convince them to start a fishing competition, and the idea really picked up speed when it was decided that the sport-fishing competition could trigger tourism to the area. The Puerto Vallarta Fishing Club was founded at that time, and the tournament was officially born in 1956. It was originally thought that only fishing enthusiasts from other parts of Mexico may be attracted to Banderas Bay for the competition, but everyone got a pleasant surprise when even Americans showed up for that very first fishing tournament. It has since attracted competitors from several countries, and the tournament seems to grow in popularity every year. Today, this long-lived competition is well-respected as one of the most prestigious sport-fishing tournaments in the entire world.
